Description
Breed History
Fifty-Five Flowery Hens were created in 1955 in Sweden by Father Martin Silverudd. We believe it was one of his greatest creations because the outcome is everything desired in a laying hen. Their feed to egg conversion is truly marvelous. We have found our hens lay well above the 250+ per year standard. As Father Silverudd’s first breed creation, it’s encouraging to know that he truly knew what he was doing. He also created the Silverudd’s Blue, which is another popular breed. Some of the other Silverudd chicken breeds have slid mostly into obscurity, but Fifty-Fives remain in a few commercial flocks in their native country, and their production is so outstanding it’s easy to see why. Fifty-Fives deliver on the goals initially established by Silverudd which was to create an autosexing chicken that produces eggs for the table in commercial quantities. His ability to use different varieties of leghorns to create a breed where the rooster and hen have distinctly different appearances from hatch through to maturity is a resounding success.
Appearance and Behavior
As day-old chicks the males are easily distinguishable from the females by the blonde down on the backs of their heads, and as adults the males are predominantly white while the females are adorned with a beautiful pattern which appears as flowers which gives the breed its name.
Typical weight at maturity
Roosters 5 to 6.5 lbs
Hens 4 to 5 lbs
The hens are not likely to get broody.
