Description

The Welsummer is named after the village Welsum, in the Netherlands, from where they originated.   Welsum is located around 75 miles east of Amsterdam, the capital of Netherlands.

This charming breed is a must-have for your flock. They are friendly, easygoing, and well-natured. Their beautiful golden-brown coloring is attractive and at the same time good camouflage from predators when free ranging. You will be grateful you chose this sweet breed as they are the fundamental chicken upon which to build your flock.

At Nickelbeak Hollow we selectively breed our heritage Welsummers for richness of color and speckling. Welsummer eggs can typically range from medium brown to very dark chocolate brown, with or without speckles, and the speckles can range from small even speckles all over the egg, to large, random speckles like blotches of paint, making these eggs some of the most interesting and attractive eggs from just one breed.

This breed is perfect for cross breeding with a blue gene breed to create Olive Eggers and is amongst our favorites on the farm. We wouldn’t be without them. Their genteel temperament, consistent laying in all seasons, and their amazing addition to the creation of a fun and colorful egg basket make Nickelbeak Hollow’s Welsummers a fantastic addition to any flock.  Each Welsummer hen will lay her own unique speckling pattern over her egg which will be consistent throughout her laying life. They are dependable layers in all seasons, matching commercial breed hens, but with a superior quality, and a longer laying life.
